#416: Repairs - 2016-11-26
The day felt short at the house in Chillán. After eating lunch, Rosa excused herself in order to take a nap, because the afternoon's heat overwhelmed her.
As in the house there was only one bed — María's — in an useable state, Clara and her children would use sleeping bags. Rosa napped over María's bed, and during the night she slept over her sleeping bag, not inside it.
The next day, work started quite early. The bedroom — once the hideout of all kinds of pests, which costed María a fortune to exterminate — was the only clean place at the house. There was plenty of work to do. That's why Clara and her children were there, in order to help María with the task of getting her house back to an inhabitable state, after years of abandonment.
El día se hizo corto en la casa de Chillán. Luego de almorzar, Rosa pidió permiso para tomar una siesta, porque el calor de la tarde la sofocaba.
Como en la casa sólo había una cama — la cama de María — en buen estado, Doña Clara y sus hijos usarían sacos de dormir para pasar la noche. Rosa durmió su siesta sobre la cama de María, y durante la noche durmió sobre su saco de dormir, no dentro de éste.
Las actividades al día siguiente comenzaron muy temprano. El dormitorio — otrora guarida de plagas de todo tipo, por las que María tuvo que pagar una fortuna para exterminar — era el único lugar limpio de la casa. Había mucho trabajo que hacer. Doña Clara y sus hijos habían ido a Chillán a eso, a ayudar a María con la tarea de volver a dejar habitable su casa, después de años de abandono.
The first thing they did after breakfast was to remove the old and teared out wallpaper, sweeping the whole house and take out the trash.
Eliana and Hugo went out to shop for materials such as floor wax, steel wool, nails, etc.; at the hardware store, Hugo asked Eliana to buy him an electric drill that was on sale. Also, they bought some boards, nails, screws, wallpaper, glue and paint, which were delivered to María's house.
At 14:30, lunch was ready. After a short nap, two hours of work, evening tea and to sleep. Many days passed so at María Sepúlveda's house.
Lo primero que hicieron después de desayunar fue quitar el papel tapiz que estaba viejo y deteriorado, barrer por toda la casa y recoger la basura.
Eliana y Hugo salieron a comprar materiales tales como cera y virutilla para pisos, clavos, etc.; al llegar a la ferretería, Hugo le pidió a Eliana comprar un taladro eléctrico que estaba en oferta. También compraron algunas tablas, clavos, tornillos, papel tapiz, pegamento y pintura, los que fueron despachados a domicilio.
A las 14:30, el almuerzo estaba listo. Luego de eso una siesta, dos horas más de trabajo, tomar once y dormir. Así pasaron varios días en la casa de María Sepúlveda.
It was during these days that Pedro displayed his innate talent at carpentry. He was quite skilled with the hand saw and quick with the hammer, and he was also had lots of strength and energy to work. Though Hugo helped him to repair the doors, Pedro did most of the work.
Pedro was so excited with his work that he committed some errors because of trusting his strength too much. In order to save some time, he tried to throw some boards from the front yard to the second floor through a glass-less window. The first board bounced at the wall, half a meter away from the window, and fell next to Pedro. The second one passed through the window, but fell through the staircase to the first floor. The third one crashed with the roof and bounced to the other side of the house. That's when María asked him to stop doing that.
Fue durante estos días que Pedro mostró su talento innato en la carpintería. Era muy hábil con el serrucho y rápido con el martillo, y además tenía mucha fuerza y energía para trabajar. Aunque Hugo le ayudó a reparar las puertas, la mayor parte del trabajo lo hizo él.
Pedro estaba tan entusiasmado que cometió algunos errores por confiar demasiado en su fuerza. Para ahorrar tiempo, intentó lanzar unas tablas desde el patio hacia el segundo piso a través de una ventana que no tenía vidrios. La primera tabla que lanzó pegó en la muralla a medio metro de la ventana, y cayó al lado de Pedro. La segunda entró, pero se cayó por la escala al primer piso. La tercera chocó con el techo y con el impulso pasó hacia el otro lado de la casa. Fue entonces que María le pidió que no volviera a hacer eso.
At the morning of the third day, they proceeded to wax the floor. They had to use slippers in order to avoid dirtying the floor. Also, it was quite slippery, so they had to be careful.
Eliana's slippers were too big for her, and she had to stop at one time to tie them again. Then, Clara, who was applying wax on the floor with a broom, didn't notice that Eliana was tying the laces of her slippers, and hit her with the broom, pushing her to the ground. Eliana, still a bit sleepy, didn't notice her and couldn't react in time; she's pushed by Clara and sliding over the waxed floor, unable to stop herself. Rosa saw Eliana sliding, and managed to stop her before she crashed on the paint buckets, though in a troubled way.
La mañana del tercer día, se procedió a encerar el piso. Había que usar pantuflas para no ensuciar el piso recién encerado. Además, había que tener cuidado, ya que estaba muy resbaladizo.
A Eliana las pantuflas le quedaban sueltas, y en una ocasión tuvo que detenerse para volver a atárselas. En eso, a doña Clara, que estaba pasando un trapo con cera con el escobillón, doña María la llama a la cocina. Doña Clara, al pasar, no se da cuenta que Eliana estaba atándose las pantuflas, y la pasa a llevar con el escobillón, empujándola hacia el suelo. Eliana, aún adormilada, no se da cuenta y es incapaz de reaccionar; es empujada por doña Clara y se desliza por el piso encerado, sin poder detenerse. Rosa ve a Eliana deslizarse, y logra detenerla antes de que choque con los baldes de pintura, aunque en forma accidentada.
